Ask how many seconds each layer cures. Most LED lamps require different times for different gel types. Rushing the cure cycle results in gummy nails that are soft to the touch. Proper curing hardens the structure, preventing cracking and warping during daily use.
A good application uses primer, dehydrator, and bonding agent. Primer removes oils to help the glue stick. Dehydrator dries the nail plate completely. Bonding agent creates a stable bridge between nail and extension. Missing steps cause immediate peeling. Watch them apply thin layers. Thick blobs of product will never cure properly and remain sticky for years.
Observe the sanding block grit used. Technicians should start with coarser grits for bulk reduction and finish with finer grits for smoothness. Using only coarse files damages the free edge and causes rapid chipping. Proper filing texture ensures the polymer bonds correctly without lifting.
Decide on the length before starting. Short sets look clean but hide less of your natural nail. Long tips add shape but risk breaking easily. Ask for a fan size that matches your nail bed. A width mismatch causes lift at the cuticle. Measure with a ruler if you are unsure. Proper alignment prevents stress points that lead to early failure.
Wear gloves when using cleaning products. Chemicals strip the bond between layers. Moisturize cuticles daily with oil. Dry cuticles lead to lifting. Avoid hot water soaking for long periods. Heat softens the gel and acrylic materials. Use a dry brush to clean debris. Gentle cleaning prevents buildup that forces you to remove the set early.
Look at the side profile of the finished nail. Uneven thickness creates weak spots prone to snapping. The gel should be thin at the tip and thicker at the base for optimal strength. Digital calipers are not used, but visual consistency confirms competent application technique and balanced structural integrity.
Some extensions come with a builder gel base. This base applies directly to the natural nail. It provides strength without adding bulk. These sets last 4 to 6 weeks. Standard tips add length and shape. Builder gel looks thinner but feels lighter. Choose based on your comfort level. Thinner sets are better for office workers who need subtle looks.
Look at the tip shape construction. The apex should sit slightly past the natural fingertip for strength. If placed directly over the nail end, it becomes a leverage point for easy breaking. Proper apex placement distributes stress evenly across the entire extension length.
Acid primer stings if it touches skin. It can cause redness or blistering. Tell the professional if you feel pain. They should apply it only to the nail surface. Base coat protects the skin from direct chemical contact. If you see red marks after the session, monitor them for 24 hours. Severe reactions require medical attention to prevent long-term damage to the nail matrix.
Ensure the room has active exhaust fans running during service. Solvent vapors from removers or gels can irritate the respiratory system. Poor ventilation indicates sloppy hygiene practices. A professional studio should maintain negative pressure to keep air fresh and safe for everyone present.
