Ask if they use acrylic or gel. Acrylic is harder and lasts longer but smells strong. Gel is lighter and dries under a UV lamp. Gel extensions feel more natural but require specific lamps. Never mix materials without checking for chip resistance. The chemical composition affects how long the tips stay attached to your natural nail plate during daily wear.
The free edge is the most fragile part. It absorbs water and expands daily. This expansion weakens the bond over time. Cracks start at the tips most often. If a tip cracks, repair it quickly. Do not let water soak into the break. Moisture causes the gel to turn grey and detach. Keep your nails dry when washing dishes to extend the life of the set.
Observe the sanding block grit used. Technicians should start with coarser grits for bulk reduction and finish with finer grits for smoothness. Using only coarse files damages the free edge and causes rapid chipping. Proper filing texture ensures the polymer bonds correctly without lifting.
Look at the side profile of the finished nail. Uneven thickness creates weak spots prone to snapping. The gel should be thin at the tip and thicker at the base for optimal strength. Digital calipers are not used, but visual consistency confirms competent application technique and balanced structural integrity.
Acid primer stings if it touches skin. It can cause redness or blistering. Tell the professional if you feel pain. They should apply it only to the nail surface. Base coat protects the skin from direct chemical contact. If you see red marks after the session, monitor them for 24 hours. Severe reactions require medical attention to prevent long-term damage to the nail matrix.
Inquire if the technician applies a dehydrator and primer before the gel. Skipping this step causes poor adhesion and lifting within days. A proper base ensures the extension bonds to the natural nail plate securely. Ask specifically about the product brand used for this crucial preparatory stage.
Inspect the lateral walls where the gel meets the skin. White lines indicate lifting, meaning the product did not adhere properly to the side of the nail. Lifting traps moisture, creating an optimal environment for bacterial growth and potential infection under the artificial tip.
Extensions grow out as your natural nails grow. Regular fills are needed to maintain structure. Most people return every 3 weeks. Gaps appear at the cuticle line if you wait too long. These gaps trap dirt and cause lifting. Ask about their policy on missed appointments. Late fills cost more because the tech must rebuild lost length and bond surface.
Do not use your nails as tools. Leaning on them causes immediate cracks. Avoid peeling the product. Peeling takes layers of your natural nail with it. This weakens the nail plate permanently. Use a proper file if a chip appears. Gentle filing smooths the edge. Aggressive filing generates heat and thins the nail thin. Careful maintenance extends the lifespan of your extensions significantly.
Ask how many seconds each layer cures. Most LED lamps require different times for different gel types. Rushing the cure cycle results in gummy nails that are soft to the touch. Proper curing hardens the structure, preventing cracking and warping during daily use.
