Inquire if the technician applies a dehydrator and primer before the gel. Skipping this step causes poor adhesion and lifting within days. A proper base ensures the extension bonds to the natural nail plate securely. Ask specifically about the product brand used for this crucial preparatory stage.
Prices vary by complexity. Simple almond shapes cost less than intricate designs. Decals and hand-painted art add time and labor. Ask if the quote includes a top coat. Top coats add shine and protection. Infill services cost less than full sets. They only need re-bonding at the cuticle. New clients pay more for full length application.
Gel nails need 30 to 60 seconds per layer under a lamp. Acrylic hardens on its own within 5 minutes. Rushing the cure leaves the material soft and tacky. Soft layers break apart easily during normal hand movements. Ask how long they leave each layer to set. Proper curing ensures durability. It prevents the extensions from warping or shrinking against the natural nail.
Extensions grow out as your natural nails grow. Regular fills are needed to maintain structure. Most people return every 3 weeks. Gaps appear at the cuticle line if you wait too long. These gaps trap dirt and cause lifting. Ask about their policy on missed appointments. Late fills cost more because the tech must rebuild lost length and bond surface.
Ask if they use acrylic or gel. Acrylic is harder and lasts longer but smells strong. Gel is lighter and dries under a UV lamp. Gel extensions feel more natural but require specific lamps. Never mix materials without checking for chip resistance. The chemical composition affects how long the tips stay attached to your natural nail plate during daily wear.
Ask if the gels contain HEMA or formaldehyde, common sensitizers. Some clients react to these chemicals, developing itchy rashes days after service. A reputable technician can offer hypoallergenic alternatives upon request. Knowing your skin sensitivity beforehand prevents painful post-service complications and discomfort.
Ask how many seconds each layer cures. Most LED lamps require different times for different gel types. Rushing the cure cycle results in gummy nails that are soft to the touch. Proper curing hardens the structure, preventing cracking and warping during daily use.
Observe the sanding block grit used. Technicians should start with coarser grits for bulk reduction and finish with finer grits for smoothness. Using only coarse files damages the free edge and causes rapid chipping. Proper filing texture ensures the polymer bonds correctly without lifting.
Wear gloves when using cleaning products. Chemicals strip the bond between layers. Moisturize cuticles daily with oil. Dry cuticles lead to lifting. Avoid hot water soaking for long periods. Heat softens the gel and acrylic materials. Use a dry brush to clean debris. Gentle cleaning prevents buildup that forces you to remove the set early.
Some extensions come with a builder gel base. This base applies directly to the natural nail. It provides strength without adding bulk. These sets last 4 to 6 weeks. Standard tips add length and shape. Builder gel looks thinner but feels lighter. Choose based on your comfort level. Thinner sets are better for office workers who need subtle looks.
