Ask for a deposit amount and final payment due date. Most professionals require 50% upfront to secure the date. The balance is usually due after image delivery. Check if the price includes travel fees or additional hours. Hidden costs often appear after the session. Clear payment terms prevent disputes and ensure you only pay for the exact services rendered and agreed upon.
Define what retouching includes. Basic cleanup removes dust and minor blemishes. Heavy editing changes facial structure or removes wrinkles. Ask for a sample of their work to see the difference. This prevents disappointment with the final result.
Clarify who owns the copyright to the images. Usually, the photographer retains copyright while granting you personal use rights. If you need commercial usage, ask for a separate license. This costs more but allows you to use images for advertising or business purposes. Define the scope of usage in writing. This prevents legal issues and ensures you have the right to publish the images where you want.
Ask what lighting gear the professional brings. Look for strobes with modeling lights and color gels. Natural light is good for daytime, but studio sessions require controlled artificial sources. Inconsistent lighting creates harsh shadows and uneven skin tones. Proper equipment ensures sharp, detailed images without visible noise or grain in the shadows.
Standard web images are 72 DPI, while print requires 300 DPI. Confirm the maximum pixel dimensions they deliver. Ask if they downsample automatically. If you plan large prints, verify the resolution matches your frame size to avoid blurry output.
Define what counts as a photo shoot versus retouching. Standard edits include cropping, color correction, and exposure adjustments. Heavy retouching, like skin smoothing or object removal, often costs extra per image. Agree on the number of retouched images in the contract. This prevents surprise invoices and ensures you know exactly what you are paying for.
Ask how you receive final files. Cloud storage links often expire after 14 days. USB drives can be lost in the mail. Download everything immediately to your local drive and verify file integrity before closing the browser window.
Plan outfits that complement the background and lighting. Avoid busy patterns that distract from the subject. Solid colors or subtle textures work best for professional portraits. Discuss fabric choices with the photographer. Loose-fitting clothes can create unflattering shadows. Proper wardrobe coordination reduces the need for extensive editing and improves the overall aesthetic of the final images.
Screens display colors differently than printed materials. Request sRGB files for web use and CMYK for printing. If they only provide sRGB, your print shop may need to convert them, which can shift hues. Confirm the profile matches your final usage.
Ask about their data backup protocol during the session. Professional cameras write to two cards simultaneously. This prevents total data loss if one card fails. If they use a single card, ask about their storage plan. Losing your photos is not a possibility. Reliable backup systems protect your investment and ensure you receive all the images you expect from the session.
