Define what retouching includes. Basic cleanup removes dust and minor blemishes. Heavy editing changes facial structure or removes wrinkles. Ask for a sample of their work to see the difference. This prevents disappointment with the final result.
Most contracts require 7 days notice for a full refund. Cancellations within 48 hours often forfeit the deposit. Read the fine print regarding rescheduling limits. Knowing these dates helps you manage your calendar without financial penalty.
Ask how you receive final files. Cloud storage links often expire after 14 days. USB drives can be lost in the mail. Download everything immediately to your local drive and verify file integrity before closing the browser window.
Clarify if styling is included or if you must hire professionals separately. On-site makeup takes 45 to 60 minutes per person. Confirm the photographer does not offer this service to avoid scheduling conflicts. Plan your morning routine accordingly.
Portfolio images often use studio strobes. Ask for 5 examples shot only with natural light. Evaluate skin tone accuracy and shadow detail. Check if their white balance shifts in mixed lighting conditions. This ensures they can handle your home environment.
Clarify who owns the copyright to the images. Usually, the photographer retains copyright while granting you personal use rights. If you need commercial usage, ask for a separate license. This costs more but allows you to use images for advertising or business purposes. Define the scope of usage in writing. This prevents legal issues and ensures you have the right to publish the images where you want.
Evaluate how the photographer directs subjects during the test shoot. Good photographers give clear, concise instructions. They know how to make people feel comfortable in front of the camera. Poor communication leads to stiff poses and unnatural expressions. Ask how they handle difficult subjects. A patient, clear communicator prevents awkward moments and produces more authentic, engaging photos.
Plan outfits that complement the background and lighting. Avoid busy patterns that distract from the subject. Solid colors or subtle textures work best for professional portraits. Discuss fabric choices with the photographer. Loose-fitting clothes can create unflattering shadows. Proper wardrobe coordination reduces the need for extensive editing and improves the overall aesthetic of the final images.
If you are shooting outside, verify who secures the location permit. Many public spaces require a paid permit for commercial photography. Confirm travel time and parking access for heavy equipment. Bad lighting or restricted areas can waste hours. Plan for weather backups if shooting outdoors. This avoids delays and ensures the session stays on schedule.
Ask exactly how long post-production takes. Standard delivery is 2 to 4 weeks for edited high-resolution files. Rush services cost more but shorten this window to 48 to 72 hours. Confirm if you receive raw files or only treated images. Knowing the timeline helps you plan when you need the images for printing or digital use.
